The gates
Ten hard laws and seventeen mechanical checks. Clearing the gates is the floor, never the bar — a name that passes every gate can still be mediocre.
The laws
01Greatness never settle for generic#
THE HARDEST RULE, above all others (2026-07-06, said with force: 'WE WANT GREATNESS — think OUT OF THE BOX'). NEVER settle for a GENERIC, category-descriptive, sounds-professional name. Keystone / Meridian / Summit / Vantage / Vertex / Zenith / Atelier / Foundry / Cornerstone / any holding-Latin-mush = BANNED even when they clear every other gate — because clearing the gates is the FLOOR, not the bar. THE BAR IS GREAT: a name carrying a STORY / POV / unexpected pairing / cultural-or-mythic reference that a client LEANS IN and asks about, then REPEATS. Benchmarks HE named: ByteDance (byte+dance = data that moves; tech×human, unexpected) · Bending Spoons (Matrix 'there is no spoon' = bending the impossible, mind-over-matter). Also his: SpaceX (space+X = eXploration) · Stripe/Ramp (one concrete real word, owned category). ⚠️ Palantir REJECTED by him 2026-07-06 ('not good' — cold/ominous/obscure-myth, not ESL, not obviously the activity); do NOT cite it as a benchmark. THE PATTERN (his, confirmed): plain ESL words that NAME THE ACTIVITY + one UNEXPECTED, WARM, clever twist — usually a DISTANT-LEAP BLEND (see GENERATION_METHODS.distant_leap_blend_PRIMARY), NEVER cold myth or generic-professional. THE TEST: 'would this make someone lean in and ask where it comes from?' If it's forgettable-professional, it FAILS — throw it out and start over. GENERIC IS THE DEFAULT FAILURE MODE TO FIGHT, never a safe fallback. Greatness is generated FIRST; the mechanical gates (.com, ≤8, radio, ESL) then FILTER the great ones — they must NEVER be used to SELECT a boring one. When stuck, the escape is not a safer word, it's a BOLDER, WARMER angle: a DISTANT-LEAP BLEND — pair the activity with a vivid word from a FAR-APART domain that captures its soul (the ByteDance move), never a cold myth and never a safer generic.
02Activity not location#
SECOND HARDEST RULE . The name must express the ACTIVITY — what the business DOES / the value it creates — NOT the LOCATION of incorporation or the founder's geography. ByteDance is CHINESE but named for its ACTIVITY (digital / TikTok dance-video), not 'China'; Bending Spoons is ITALIAN but named for its ACTIVITY (buying dead apps and bringing them back to life = bending the impossible), not 'Italy'. So a HK-incorporated group must NOT wear HK/China/Orient/Pearl/Jade/Cathay/Kowloon/Silk/Eastern/Monsoon geographic-or-cultural labels just because that's where the paperwork sits — that names the ADDRESS, not the business. NAME THE VERB: what does it DO for the buyer? Location-cultural names also CAP the company (a 'Jade/Orient' brand is forever boxed as a China-heritage play; an activity name travels anywhere the activity goes — ByteDance sells worldwide, not as 'a Chinese brand'). TEST: strip the geography — would the name still fit if the exact same activity were run from Lisbon or Austin? If it only makes sense because of WHERE it's registered, it FAILS. (This retired JadeFleet/MonsoonTide — both named the region, not the work.)
03Real Words not elvish coinage— adult warmth test#
(2026-07-11 — 'bake this in the gate'). THE AUDIENCE-WARMTH GATE — as fundamental as 0/0b. INVENTED/COINED SOUNDS read ELVISH-FANTASY-GEEK and land COLD on a real ADULT Chinese/MENA business person (a 50-yr-old Shenzhen factory boss, a GLSTF trader, a MENA importer). Regno/Aurel/Novar/Auren/Embra/Valen/Velor/Solen/Ryven — and the parfum-Latin Noirael/Aurvex/Noctavo/Sovaria/Ictova batch — ALL failed HERE: they mean nothing, evoke NO image, sound like RPG character names. What makes EverLotus and ByteDance WARM + INSTANT to that adult = they are made of REAL, RECOGNIZABLE WORDS that fire a concrete IMAGE the moment they're heard (a lotus in bloom; bytes dancing). The adult GETS IT AND FEELS IT immediately. RULE for his worldwide (China+MENA+West) audience: prefer a COMPOUND OF REAL WORDS (ByteDance / EverLotus / GoldenTide register) that evokes an instant image + warmth — NOT an invented coinage. IMPORTANT CORRECTION to the earlier 'meaning-light coinage is fine (Klarna/Vercel/Stripe)' line: that is a WESTERN-FINTECH-FOUNDER register and it does NOT warm a Chinese/MENA adult buyer — to them it is a meaningless foreign sound. Coinage is the LAST resort (only when every real-word path is exhausted AND it is a clean two-real-words fusion like Tencent='ten cent'), never the default. TEST: say it to a 50-year-old Shenzhen factory owner — does an IMAGE light up in their head instantly (PASS), or do they hear a foreign nonsense-sound (FAIL)? Bonus: a novel real-word COMPOUND is also unique -> free at CR/.com, AND spellable-cold (both halves are known words). 04Smart Tech not geek— houhai titan register#
(2026-07-12 — 'bake this in the naming gate'). REFINES the ByteDance real-word-compound move (0c) for the TECH half. When one half is a TECH/DIGITAL word (his software-founder edge + '2026' feel + the Shenzhen-Bay ambition), the WORD CHOICE decides GEEK vs MOGUL: use BROAD, WARM tech words an adult instantly PICTURES — pixel, signal, data, cloud, code, stream, pulse, wave, spark, current, digital, vector — NOT programmer-JARGON (kernel, hash, node, socket, cache, buffer, daemon, packet, root, commit, deploy; even 'byte' can read nerdy) which lands GEEK/hardware-nerd and COLD on a real adult. Then FUSE the warm-tech word with DOMINATION or ASCENSION (reign, rise, tide, peak, crown, dawn, surge, storm, throne) = the register of the SHENZHEN-BAY / HOUHAI TECH TITAN (ByteDance = byte+DANCE, Tencent, DJI, SenseTime, CloudWalk — clean, confident, image-firing, dominant). TARGET FEEL = 'the smart tech guy who DOMINATES Shenzhen Bay / has the building in Houhai', NOT the RPG-geek, NOT the hardware-nerd. PASSES: CodeReign (rule via code), PixelTide (the digital wave rising), CloudReign, SignalPeak, DataDawn. FAILS: Noxvolt / Kernelforge / anything -daemon/-packet/-node (jargon+geek). 05Laidback not tryhard— menace tranquille test#
(2026-07-12 — 'bake this in the naming gate'). THE MENACE-TRANQUILLE GATE — his sharpest naming insight, and it IS his life-axiom applied to names. TRYING TO SOUND POWERFUL = the tell of the geeky kid who 'wants to reign over the world with his geeky thing' = the OPPOSITE of power. FLEX WORDS ARE BANNED as the soul-half: Reign, Crown, Throne, Empire, Dominion, Sovereign, Rule, Iron, Prime, Apex, Titan, Force, Power, Supreme, Elite, Alpha — and Vertex/Cortex/Nexus when used to sound dominant. They read try-hard, insecure, Warcraft-villain, childish. The TRULY iconic/powerful names are LAIDBACK — ByteDance, Google, Amazon, Apple, Stripe, Meta, Uber — they NEVER announce power, they IMPLY it; power is EARNED by what's built, not flexed in the name. ByteDance's 'DANCE' is light, human, casual — and yet the empire. This is his OWN doctrine verbatim: 'danger is competence, not flash' / 'menace tranquille' / 'imply don't prove' / 'the mystery man never shows the number'. RULE: the soul-half fused to the tech/concrete word must be LIGHT / HUMAN / NATURAL / CASUAL (dance, drift, run, roam, glide, wave, flow, bloom, dawn, tide, leap, spark, ride) — NOT a domination word. THE TEST: does the name FLEX (tries to sound powerful -> FAIL, geeky-kid) or is it CONFIDENT ENOUGH NOT TO FLEX (laidback, understated -> PASS, menace tranquille)? ACCEPT that the right name SOUNDS laidback, not 'powerful' — that IS the point (ByteDance sounded relaxed before it crushed everything; power comes from what you BUILD, not a flexing name). Links: 0c/0d (real-word + tech-word rules), style/relationships 'danger is competence not flash' + 'menace tranquille' + content 'imply don't prove', TASTE_CORPUS.his_exemplars (ByteDance/Google/Amazon), DO_NOT_REVERT #13.
06The Phone Test— one word writable on first hearing#
(2026-07-25) THE FIRST FILTER RUN ON EVERY CANDIDATE, BEFORE story/meaning/register. Say it ONCE on a phone; the listener must WRITE IT CORRECTLY on paper with zero spelling help. ONE WORD ONLY (or a tight two-ultra-common-word compound like Facebook). AUTO-FAIL: multi-word phrases · idiom-sentences · 'The X of Y' · verb phrases · homophone-ambiguous letters (c/k/s, ph/f, -le/-el/-al, i/y) · silent letters · accents · anything needing 'no, with a K'. A plain writable name BEATS a clever unwritable one every time — this gate outranks GATE 0 greatness. Full rationale + the 2026-07-25 kill list: DO_NOT_REVERT #14.
07Not Name Slop— anti AI averaging#
(2026-08-27) THE ANTI-SLOP GATE. AI namers (Namelix/ChatGPT/Atom) do LINGUISTIC AVERAGING — they converge on the statistical centre of 'what a good name looks like' and all output the same thing: 'short, punchy, vaguely technical, ends in a vowel or an x', or a [Adjective][Noun] compound (NovaTech/BrightPath/SwiftFlow). Documented-saturated 2026 tokens to AVOID: Nova · Flux · Pulse · Nexus/Nexum · Atlas · Orbit · Vectra/Vanta-class · Synth · Neural · Axera. ⚠️ SELF-CHECK: greathunt's APEX×PERCUSSION lists produce EXACTLY this [noun][noun] slop shape → a mechanically-netted candidate is guilty-until-proven-distinctive. THE TEST: would an off-the-shelf AI generator have produced this from a one-line brief? If yes = slop, kill it. THE FIX is the same one agencies use against human groupthink: the DISGUISED-BRIEF DIVERGENCE (GENERATION_METHODS.three_team_method) — generate from a tangential/unrelated domain to escape the centre, THEN filter. Links: distant_leap_blend_PRIMARY, TOOLS.greathunt.
08First Read— dominant sense wins#
(2026-08-27, the first-read scar: 'billing evokes being billed, not being on top; market day evokes finance, not marketing') THE FIRST-READ GATE, science-backed [High]. THE LAW: a bare brand name is a ZERO-CONTEXT read, and psycholinguistics is unambiguous about what happens then — the DOMINANT (most frequent everyday) sense of each word wins the race (Duffy/Morris/Rayner 1988 'reordered access'; the subordinate-bias effect: forcing a rare sense costs measurable effort and only happens with strong PRIOR context, which a name never has until the brand is already famous). So: billing → invoices (not theatre credits), market → finance (not the town square). THE RULE: the intended read must BE the buyer's dominant everyday read of the words — a name whose cleverness lives in a SUBORDINATE sense is structurally dead, however good the story. PUN POLARITY corollary (Dimofte & Yalch 2007, JCR): an unfavorable secondary meaning fires AUTOMATICALLY and unconsciously and damages perception even when the intended meaning is favorable ⇒ a double meaning is an asset ONLY when (a) BOTH senses are positive AND (b) the dominant sense IS the intended one (checkmate-class passes: both senses win; the invoicing-read fails: dominant sense = being invoiced). THE PROBE (run on EVERY finalist BEFORE pitching, costs minutes): the COLD-READ TEST — ask ≥3 fresh zero-context LLM sessions across model families, third-person framing ('a company is called X — what do they sell? what industry? first feeling?'), NEVER revealing you like the name (sycophancy control), ≥5 runs each, score the MODE: if responses converge ≥60% on a WRONG or NEGATIVE category, DEAD. This is a comprehension screen ONLY — never use LLM runs to rank preference between survivors (2024-26 evidence: LLM preference answers trend random/flattened; comprehension probes are the valid use). Human version when stakes are high: free-association on the naked word ('first thing this word means to you?' — the Twilley 1994 dominance-norming instrument) + blind category-guess ('what does this name sound like it sells?' — the PickFu/5-second-test question). PRIOR SCARS THIS GATE COMPILES (they were recorded as instances, never generalized — that was the skill defect): a word that reads as 'passive' · 'latent'→'dormant' · 'corpus'→'corpse' · one that reads as an apology · one as a body part · one as finance · the invoicing-read · the finance-read. Links: DO_NOT_REVERT #15 (why such names keep surfacing as 'available'), wordplay_that_installs_itself (polarity caveat), GENERATION_METHODS.cold_read_probe, naming-log.md §4.
09MOLDU Friendliness#
(2026-09-16, the moldu scar - 'not friendly enough for hair dresser non tech regular moldus people'). The name must read WARM and human to a NON-TECH regular person (a hairdresser, a shop owner - the actual buyer), not tech-SaaS-clever. Clever compounds that cold-read 'workflow automation' can fail HERE even after passing 0h: moldus don't buy workflow, they buy friendly help. Evidence: one candidate (killed by founder) while hairday/glowday/hairmate all probed warm/friendly (but died on product-shelf reads). Test: the 0h probe feeling-word must land warm/friendly AND the story must be sayable to a moldu in one breath without tech words.
10Heard Spelling one obvious typing#
(2026-09-16, 'risk being typed manflo'). Extends 0f: the SPOKEN form must map to exactly ONE obvious spelling; a silent/dropped-vowel trap = fail (mane heard as 'man' -> manflo). Check the organic typo variant too: if users will mistype it, the wrong form must not be a competitor's domain; owning typo domains is mitigation, never a gate pass.
The mechanical checks
Buyer invoice test#
THE killer gate (his invention 2026-07-05, = the buyer-probe generalized): say out loud to a REAL client — 'you'll see a charge from ______'. The name must sound like a credible BUSINESS SERVICE on a card statement, not a consumer product. This test executed the whole pretty-coinage class at once (one coinage reading as a water bottle, one as a printer, one as a crypto casino, one as a music startup).
Both parts earn their place#
The both-parts law: every syllable must MEAN something (auto+mano = car+hand; hs+mate = HS-code+helper≈checkmate). Filler suffixes (-ano, -ora, -ify, -ly bolted on) = instant fail ('why that tail? it means nothing here').
Radio test#
Spellable on FIRST hearing over the phone. Kills: x/q clusters, Latin coinages, ambiguous c/s, obscure words.
Esl test#
Made of simple INTERNATIONAL words (A1/A2: top, gold, star, king, fame, bell, medal, drum...) or perfectly phonetic coinage. Kills: hawk-class words ESL buyers can't picture or spell.
French read test#
He is French; say it with a French ear. Kills: a coinage that reads as 'salmon', one whose 'said' reads the Arabic name Saïd, one where 'sale' reads dirty. Any comic/off homophone in FR = dead.
Letter phonosemantics#
Initial letter carries trust-register: Z opens edgy/gaming/crypto (a Z-initial rejected for exactly this); soft-solid initials (B, M, V, S, F, L) open trust. Match the initial to the register.
Length and form#
TLD per RANKED_TLD_POLICY (relaxed 2026-08-27: .com default > <name>qualifier.com > .ai for AI-native > .io dev-only > .co weak; blacklist .xyz/.org/.net/novelty-as-brand; matched to the buyer). ≤8 LETTERS, letters only, one word — memorable + fast to type (his best name is exactly 8 = the ceiling). Compounds: BOTH parts ≥3 letters AND both real meaningful words (curated-dictionary intersection, not corpus fragments); 4+4 balanced splits > 3+5.
LENGTH IS SOFT, NOT A HARD CEILING (corrected 2026-07-06): ≤8 is the strong DEFAULT, but two 9-character names both LOCKED — go to 9-10 if the name is genuinely distinctive/brandable with open trademark space. The real availability+quality ladder: 5-LETTER INVENTED (the scarcest open lane) > 6-8 compound > 9 real-word-if-distinctive. And GREATNESS (GATE 0) outranks length outright — ByteDance=9, Bending Spoons=13. Do not let the ≤8 rule kill a great Register-C name.
Register fit#
Descriptive compounds (the descriptive-compound class) read tool/SaaS = cap pricing power; pretty coinages (the pretty-coinage class) read consumer/FMCG = fail invoice test. The AGENCY + HOLDING register is REGISTER C — SpaceX/ByteDance: a plain activity word + a distant-leap twist (see THE_THREE_REGISTERS). NOT generic-professional 'Thrive/Victorious/Meridian-class' (= the bland lane he rejected as 'mid'), NOT Register-A consumer coinage. Pick register from the BUYER/BRAND-TYPE BEFORE generating.
Swap test#
(from /brand) Replace the name with a competitor's in your messaging — if it still works, the name is generic.
Wordplay that installs itself#
The winner-factor: a play the listener GETS free (the checkmate portmanteau) = zero marketing budget to explain. Highest-value property a name can have. ⚠️ POLARITY CONDITION (2026-08-27, the first-read scar): the play only counts if GATE 0h passes — both senses positive AND the dominant everyday sense = the intended one. A pun whose dominant sense is mundane/negative (billing=invoices) is a LIABILITY dressed as cleverness; the buyer's brain fires the wrong sense automatically (Dimofte & Yalch 2007) and most listeners never reach the clever one.
Fluency kill rule#
(science, strongest finding) If a stranger can't pronounce it correctly on FIRST SIGHT of the written word, kill it. Alter & Oppenheimer (Princeton/PNAS): fluently-named stocks measurably outperformed disfluent ones post-IPO; effect replicates cross-culturally incl. Chinese, extends to trust + perceived risk. No 'it's pronounced…' brands, no misspelled real words (the r/branding 'Xpertly' forced-rename post-mortem).
Context render test#
(the sorgella scar, ecom 2026-05) A name that survives LIST review can die instantly IN SITU — render finalists on a mock page/logo/invoice before locking ('wtf sorgella is awful' after 6 batches of approval). Cheapest gate with the highest observed save; complements the invoice test.
Rankability ai entity test#
(3 portfolio scars: one unrankable, one unownable, one bland + 2026 AI-search science) Can you OWN the name's SERP and be entity-UNAMBIGUOUS to LLMs? Google it AND ask 2-3 LLMs 'what is <name>?' pre-commit. This is now a named 2026 'FOURTH TEST' (beyond memorable/trademarkable/SEO-findable): will an AI reproduce YOUR name when a user describes the category without naming a company? Dictionary/common words (Apex, Nova, Orbit) are explicitly HIGH-COLLISION — the model resolves to a clearer, better-known entity. Positive form: the SEO-vacuum check (a low-volume app name: low volume, ~0 competition = ownable). ⚠️ CEILING CAVEAT — do NOT over-index on naming-for-AI-citation: Semrush's 2026 ghost-citation study (3,981 appearances) found 61.7% of AI citations NEVER name the brand, and ChatGPT names the brand only ~21% of the time (Gemini ~84%). A distinctive name aids entity resolution but CANNOT force a model to say it — the operational fix is entity consistency (POST_LOCK_GOVERNANCE.ai_entity_disambiguation), not name choice alone. No controlled study yet proves coined > dictionary for citation RATE — treat that as directional [Medium].
Outcome not mechanism#
(portfolio lessons) Name the OUTCOME/promise, not the mechanism ('FreeFlow' named the flow → dropped; one product's name sells the outcome). Bonus tier: NARRATIVE SCALING — prefer a name that auto-writes future messaging (Peer: 'what your peers see when you charge/pay/drive…' = a tagline generator for every SKU, compounding work for free).
Sound symbolism palette#
(generation input, not law) Match mouth-feel to positioning: FRONT vowels i/e = small/fast/light/sharp; BACK vowels o/u/a = big/rich/smooth/powerful (Yorkston&Menon 'Frish vs Frosh'). PLOSIVES p/b/t/d/k/g = impact/reliability (initial plosive boosts memorability); FRICATIVES f/v/s/z = speed/elegance. Lexicon letter map: v=alive (Corvette/Vercel), b=reliable (BlackBerry), z=attention, x=innovation. A trust brand full of z's and i's fights its own phonetics (= why a Z-initial failed the trust read). Also: coined names win RECOGNITION, real words win RECALL — pick per channel. DISTINGUISH (critical): SMOOTHIE-MASH portmanteaus that blur two SOUNDS into a fuzzy new word = forgettable (avoid); CLEAN BLENDS of two WHOLE real words from far-apart domains (byte+dance, pin+interest) = the winning method (GENERATION_METHODS.distant_leap_blend_PRIMARY). Test: can you still hear BOTH real words? Yes = keep; blurred = drop.
PHONESTHEMES (Brennan et al., J. Consumer Psychology 2024 [Medium — primary PDF unread]): sound-clusters carrying a dominant meaning (sn- → nose/breath: sneeze/sniff/snort; gl- → light: glow/glint/gleam) can be deliberately embedded in an INVENTED name to pre-load meaning — but ONLY when the activated meaning is CONGRUENT with the product category (congruent lifted preference + purchase-intent across 6 experiments; incongruent did nothing). Use as a generation INPUT for coinages: pick a category-matching phonestheme, build the coinage around it.
Position against the category#
(Igor/A-Hundred-Monkeys) Map competitors on the taxonomy Functional→Invented→Experiential→Evocative and name where the category ISN'T. And Lexicon's polarization signal: a name everyone is instantly comfortable with is wallpaper — BlackBerry, Sonos, Pentium were all initially rejected. NEVER focus-group a name (groups reliably pick the safest, would have killed Apple/Google/Virgin); test by USING it in a realistic artifact one-on-one (= his invoice/phone test), or decide from strategy.
Linguistic screen all markets#
(pro process + his geography) Native-speaker check in EVERY launch language: pronunciation, profanity-adjacency, connotation. For this operator MANDARIN + CANTONESE are MANDATORY on any Latin name — and CANTONESE is checked SEPARATELY from Mandarin: different homophone space (no Mandarin retroflex/'r'), and the disaster mode in Chinese is almost always HOMOPHONIC, not semantic (screen candidates against near-homophone characters + their connotations — cf. Coca-Cola's 'wax toad' first transliteration). Method 2026: an LLM does a legit FIRST PASS (enumerate near-homophones + meanings across Mandarin/Cantonese) but a human native reader — ideally a Cantonese speaker separate from a Mandarin one — is the load-bearing check; AI alone is NOT sufficient. Plus the French-read gate above. ANCHOR DISCIPLINE: the canonical REAL disaster is Mitsubishi PAJERO → rebadged Montero/Shogun ('pajero' = Spanish slang); the famous Chevy Nova 'no va' story is APOCRYPHAL (Snopes/Zinzin — it sold fine) → never cite Nova as a cautionary tale. The domain being available says nothing about the name being usable.
